CV Putri Intan Kencana, known by its brand name Jernip Kencana, is a family business based in the Kuningan district of Indonesia. Founded in 1996 by Nunung Nurhayati, the company quickly became a local success story with its lemon juice-based products, especially valued for their health benefits. However, this success brought with it the need for a robust intellectual property (IP) strategy to ensure the sustainability of the business.

When Dadan Hamdani took over the management of the company, he initiated significant steps to both grow the brand and protect the business's intellectual assets. In this journey, Dadan found his biggest ally in the World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) Intellectual Property Management Clinic (IPMC).
The Role of WIPO’s Intellectual Property Management Clinic
Developed by WIPO and implemented in collaboration with Indonesia's Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) and institutions like the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, the IPMC is a four-month program tailored for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The program offers one-on-one mentoring, expert advice, and training opportunities to help businesses optimize their intangible asset portfolios. Participants also gain the chance to expand their business networks.
By joining the IPMC, Dadan aimed to refine his business strategies and establish a stronger foundation for Jernip Kencana’s intellectual property. With the support of WIPO experts, he identified critical gaps in protecting the company’s secret lemon juice recipe. The recipe, passed down orally with no written documentation, left the company’s most valuable trade secret vulnerable, posing significant risks to both business continuity and competitiveness.
Business Continuity Through IP Strategy
During mentorship sessions with IPMC experts, Dadan learned the importance of properly documenting and safeguarding the lemon juice recipe as a trade secret. It became clear that simply keeping the recipe to himself was insufficient; he also had to ensure its security and guarantee its accessibility for the future.
With this newfound awareness, Dadan began restructuring the company’s business strategy. He systematically documented the trade secrets and focused on renewing the company’s trademark. Reflecting on the process, Dadan stated, “Thanks to IPMC, I discovered the potential to build a strong intellectual property portfolio for my company. I now have a much deeper understanding of the value of our assets, such as trademarks and trade secrets.”
WIPO and Global Intellectual Property Support
Dadan believes that the IPMC not only provides a significant opportunity for his business but also for other SMEs across Indonesia. By helping local businesses develop IP strategies that align with international standards, WIPO aims to enhance their competitiveness in the global market.
Expressing his hope for the IPMC to be offered annually to all SMEs in Indonesia, Dadan added, “The guidance and insights from the experts have greatly contributed to the growth of our business. This program has helped us secure a stronger position in the market.”
Jernip Kencana stands out as a company that has improved not only its product quality but also its IP protection mechanisms with the support of WIPO. Through these strategies, the company continues to contribute to the local economy and serves as an inspiration to other entrepreneurs in Indonesia. WIPO’s IPMC program remains a cornerstone of this success story.
