The story of Turkish Airlines began on May 20, 1933, with a modest start of five aircraft and fewer than 30 employees. Established as the State Airlines Administration, the company made its first steps into the aviation industry under the leadership of Fesan Evrensev, Turkey's first aviator and general manager. The airline conducted its first international flight in 1947 from Istanbul to Athens, and in 1955, it was renamed Turkish Airlines and became a member of IATA (International Air Transport Association). During this period, the fleet grew to 33 aircraft, and the airline began flying to new destinations such as Nicosia, Beirut, and Cairo.

Turkish Airlines continued to grow, using Istanbul Yeşilköy Airport (later Atatürk Airport), completed in 1953 and opened to international air traffic, as its hub. The transition from piston-engine aircraft to jet-engine aircraft marked the beginning of a new era in aviation history. The "wild goose" emblem, designed by Mesut Manioğlu in 1959, became the signature of the company. By 1983, celebrating its 50th anniversary, Turkish Airlines was operating flights to Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, and America with over 5,000 employees across four continents. In 2000, the company launched the Miles&Smiles program and joined the Star Alliance in 2008. Today, Turkish Airlines boasts a young fleet of 459 aircraft, holds the title of the airline flying to the most countries in the world, and operates flights to over 120 countries.
